Ohio Ohio Censuses

Ohio has been included in U.S. federal censuses since the first one in 1790 (when it was part of the Northwest Territory before statehood in 1803).

Federal censuses occur every 10 years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, and continuing decennially to the present (e.g., 1960 through 2020, with 2030 upcoming).

Ohio did not conduct statewide censuses (no regular state-level population censuses like some other states). However, county-level quadrennial enumerations (taken every 4 years from 1803 to 1911) exist for determining voting districts and related purposes. These are not full censuses but partial population counts or voter/tax lists, often used as substitutes in genealogy.

Most federal census records for Ohio survive and are widely available, but some are missing or incomplete:
1790: Exists (as Northwest Territory), but limited detail (only heads of household).
1800: Mostly lost/destroyed; only Washington County survives.
1810: Mostly lost (burned in 1812); only Washington County survives. (Duplicate tax lists often serve as a substitute.)
1820: Exists, but Franklin County and Wood County are missing.
1830–1880: Fully exist and are complete for Ohio.
1890: Almost entirely destroyed in a 1921 fire; only small fragments survive (e.g., Cincinnati in Hamilton County and Wayne Township in Clinton County).
1900 and later: Fully exist (up to 1950 publicly available; newer ones released over time due to 72-year privacy rules).

These records provide details like household composition, ages, occupations, birthplaces, and more (details increase significantly from 1850 onward).
