Used in the Hurley Family Tree to show that the 1905 "Neill O'Hurly" is very likely Clann Eruilb, a separate lineage unconnected to the O'Hurlys of Urthuile. Establishes that "ua Eruilb" (from Old Norse Herjólfr) is a real, separately documented lineage tied to the AD 962/964 Kildare ransom event recorded in the Annals of Ulster (see source #7), distinct from Ó hUrthuile/O'Hurly. Thornton treats Clann Eruilb's own origin, Gaelic versus Hiberno-Norse, as an open question. The resemblance to "O'Hurly" is phonetic only; the article gives no reason to think the two names are connected. |
