Independent modern scholarly reference, not derived from CHAS 1905 or Connellan. Entry: "Ó hUrthuile — O Hurrilly, O'Hurley, Hurley; also written Ó hUrthaile, and sometimes pronounced Ó hUirthuile." Glosses the surname as "descendant of Urthuile," and describes it as "the name of a Dalcassian family in Thomond, akin to those of O'Moloney and O'Kearney; now dispersed throughout Munster," with "an important branch of the family settled at Knocklong, in the east of Co. Limerick, where the remains of their castle is still a conspicuous object on the Hill of Knocklong." Corroborates the surname's derivation from an ancestor named Urthuile, the Dalcassian/Thomond origin, and the Knocklong branch, all independently of the CHAS 1905 article. Gives no generational detail and cannot confirm which Urthuile the surname is named for. |
