Hurley Family Tree

Grant dated 19 Dec 1615 (surrender 16 Dec 1615; deed of assignment from Sir James Sempill 28 Jan 1616/17) to Florence McDonell Cartie of Banduff and RANELL OGE HURLEY of Belanecarigehin, Co. Cork, gentlemen, assignees of Sir James Sempill, knight. To hold for ever, as of the Castle of Dublin, by fealty.

The lands marked ":" in the manuscript - including "The Castle of Ballinecarrigg, als Bealanecarrigeh, & 2 Plowlands in Ardea Qr." plus Gortnemucklagh, Ardkeaghan, Niddineghmore, Kilcaskane, Inshyfune, Kilmyne, Lisgubba, and half-ploughlands of Kilbree, Kilverogh, Bonynvinerie and Cluonycregien (roughly 13 1/2 ploughlands plus gneeves) - were erected into the MANOR OF BEALANACARRIGEH (Ballinacarriga), with 1,000 acres in demesne, power to create tenures, and a Court Baron. (The "x"-marked lands on the same patent formed the separate Manor of Banduff, for Florence McCarthy.)

Chief rents, services and royalties are reserved to Donell McCartie, then the King's ward. A fair patent for "Nydenagh More" to Ranell Oge Hurley carries the same date (Book of Fairs, p. 20).

This is the founding land-title record of the Hurley lordship of Ballinacarriga under English tenure, confirmed independently by the 1631 Bandonbridge inquisition (see source "Bandonbridge Inquisition 1631"), which recites this same 1615 surrender-and-regrant when tracing the descent from Ranell Hurley senior to his son and heir Ranell Oge Hurley.
