A 1734 Registered Pedigree of the Macnamaras of Co. Clare (petitioned by Francis Macnamara of Moyriesk for brothers John and Claude-Matthew Macnamara, officers in French royal service), certified by Ulster King of Arms William Hawkins and attested by the Lord Lieutenant, the Duke of Dorset. THE HURLY DESCENT (roundel no. 18): "Richardus Burk de Borris in Com. Tipper., cognominatus Mc Walter o Leagh" [Richard Burke of Borris, Co. Tipperary, called MacWalter of Ileagh] married "Margareta fil. Tho. Hurly de Lisduff in Com. Tipper. Baronetti" [Margaret, daughter of Thomas Hurly of Lisduff, Co. Tipperary, Baronet]. Their descent: Margaret Hurly m. Richard Burke > dau. Margaret Burke m. Thomas St John > dau. Catherine St John m. John Macnamara > sons John and Claude-Matthew Macnamara (the petition's subjects) - making the two brothers great-great-grandsons of Sir Thomas Hurly, Baronet. ARMS KEY, no. 18, HURLY: "Az. on a fess bet. 3 [cross crosslets] O. as many mullets G." = Azure, on a fess between three cross crosslets Or, as many (three) mullets Gules - i.e. THREE RED MULLETS ON THE FESS, NO HAND. A later-hand pencil "trick" (sketch) beside the entry confirms this reading exactly (three mullets, no hand), with a bracketed "(?)" of uncertain meaning - possibly a later query against the different, hand-bearing blazon of the 1854 confirmation to Robert Conway Hurly (see source "Hurly Arms Confirmation 1854"). This is the earliest dated record of the Hurly arms found so far, and shows the "hand between two mullets" charge was a 19th-century modification of an earlier three-mullet coat. Sir Thomas Hurly, Baronet, of Lisduff/Knocklong, Co. Tipperary/Limerick, is also the ancestor cited (without descent detail) in the 1854 confirmation to Robert Conway Hurly of Tralee ("a descendant of which was Sir Thomas Hurly Baronet of Knocklong"), making this pedigree a key link for the Knocklong Hurly line, distinct from the Ballinacarriga Hurleys of Co. Cork. Full transcription and analysis (working document) in D. Hurley's Claude research project ("Ballinacarriga Castle"), file claude/macnamara-registered-pedigree-transcription.txt (also see GEDCOM file claude/macnamara-registered-pedigree-vol6.ged). |
