Text

July 1584: pardons issued to "Randal oge Hurley of Ballinacarriga castle" and other Carbery men described as "Florence Carthie's [McCarthy's] men." This is the earliest record found so far that ties RANDAL OGE HURLEY to Ballinacarriga castle by name - a year before the 1585 datestone carved in the castle's top-floor window recess. It shows the tower was already standing, or nearly finished, by 1584.

Quoted (not yet seen in the original Fiants text) via John T. Collins, "Dermot Moyle McCarthy of Carbery," Journal of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society 56 (1951), p. 45, who cites Fiants Eliz. 4488 and 4493. TO DO: check the original Fiants text (De Búrca reprint, 1994, or the 15th/16th Reports of the Deputy Keeper, PRO Ireland) for the exact wording and any additional names.
