Her Valedictory.

Every generation has its peculiar source of inspiration, toward which worshipful eyes are directed, and young men and women ever aim. The far East has its Light of Asia; the West its Star of Bethlehem; the more spiritual of the Romans of old, turn theirs eyes to Aurora, the goddess of Dawn. As she rises from the slumber of night, the doors of her silver palace open, revealing the glittering columns, the ivory ceiling, and she comes forth to lead the Chariot of the Sun, accompanied by all her resplendent train. Seated in the diamond studded Chariot is Apollo, god of life, invention and art. The Stars of night, answering the signal of the Day Star, disappear. The glorious train mounts higher and higher, making the heavens flame with dazzling light. So has there arisen from the slumbers of a the dark ages, the great luminary of modern civilization.

Even so, true to this law, has America's star arisen in the East, mounted o're the jeers of Kings and the tyranny of Courts, becoming more and more brilliant out of every crisis, beating down every war cloud and melting away the haze and confusion of statescraft. Up it mounts with the prayers of our patriots, ever higher and mor brilliant, with the best blood of our heroes, by they the heroes of war, or the more numerous heroes of private life. In all the troublous times that try mens souls, we never lost faith for a moment in its destiny, and now so proudly sets in the state, that all nations turn to behold the genius of America's supremacy,--- the spirit of greater Americanism.

My not the Class of 1902 turn their eyes to this guiding star? May they not listen to our great inspirer and prophet, Emerson, "If God has called any of you to explore truth and beauty, be bold, be firm, be true. I am sorry for my early visions. I must eat the good of the land and let learning and romantic expectations go until a more convenient season then dies the man in you; once more perish the bonds of art and poetry and science, as they died already in a thousand, thousand men."

The broad minded, philanthropic purpose in Education is to call forth mans
's hidden powers and give him a grasp on the future. An individual who discovers that there is a real freedom and creative power in the depths of of man, has found the first principle in the advancement of the world. From this he easily deducts that man id begotten of the Creator, not made; he is of the substance of the Creator, not of Creation.

Nevertheless the principle of success lies not wholly in gifts and powers received of the Creator, but in a certain elemental faith or self persistence in spite of difficulty; an endeavor to go through the joys and sorrows of life without self pity or self praise. And by the strength of ones faith, to throw out such influence over his surroundings as to fashion them best to the uses of the soul. Such an ambition means growth and strength. But assimilation of the world to one's self, is decline and dissolution.

Modern life, with all its vast achievements, may seem to some to furnish little opportunity for betterment; but we are only on the very threshold of startling events, which will be wrought by those who have the life giving spirit of Education. That America has gained for herself a place merely among nations, is sufficient; that her commerce stirs every sea, is not enough; that each citizen is his own sovereign, is still far short of the spirit of aggressive Americanism. As the first bud of spring feels a new life awakening, so have we felt the thrill of might as a world power. Our mission is not to subdue, but to elevate , not to rule, but to educate; to set up a kingdom of Heaven in a hundred million hearts, and bring all the world to realize that the true spirit of Education is at once our patron Saint and Star of Empire.
