A sourced timeline compiled 24-26 Sep 2026, drawing on: George Bennett, History of Bandon (enlarged ed. 1869), ch. X; "Some Account of the Family of O'Hurly," JCHAS 12 (1906); M.W. Samuel, The Tower Houses of West Cork, PhD thesis, UCL (1998); Heritage Ireland/OPW site description; Lewis, Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (1837); Roaringwater Journal blog (2026); durrushistory.com; and primary records separately cited elsewhere (1615 patent, 1631 inquisition, 1634 Santiago genealogy). Full citations for each claim are in the working document.

This is a secondary, compiled source (not a single archival document) used to cite facts drawn from published secondary literature about Ballinacarriga Castle and RANDAL OGE HURLEY where no single primary record has yet been individually catalogued as its own source. Key facts and their underlying citations:

  • The carved date 1585 and initials "R.M. / C.C." in a window recess on the castle's top floor, read as Randal Muirhily (Hurley) and Catherine O'Cullane. [Heritage Ireland/OPW; Irish Times "Where's That"; Roaringwater Journal Pt 2; Dunmanway Historical Association]
  • George Bennett, History of Bandon, ch. X: "This Randal Oge, who built the castle of Beallenecarrigy in 1585, died in 1631..." Also Bennett's two folklore tales: the tally-stick wage swindle of the workmen who built the castle, and the "seven sons at one birth" curse story about Catherine O'Cullinane.
  • OPW/Heritage Ireland caveat: parts of the tower may be about 100 years older than 1585 and may first have been a McCarthy tower; 1585 may date a rebuild/embellishment of the top floor rather than first construction.
  • Lewis, Topographical Dictionary (1837): reads the inscription as commemorating "Randal McCarty and his wife Catherine Collins" (a minority, disputed reading; all other sources read it as Hurley).
  • 1654: castle and lands forfeited (Cromwellian settlement) and pass to the Crofts family - consistent across secondary sources, no single primary record yet cited.
  • 1641/1642: outlawry of "Randal Oge Beg" (grandson, per JCHAS 1906) after the 1641 rising; Samuel (1998) dates the actual estate forfeiture to 1642 at Youghal.
  • Used for the earliest image of the castle (NLI sketch, April 1841, William Frazer) and general provenance notes.

This source should be treated as a pointer to the underlying published works, not as an archival original; where a fact has since been given its own dedicated webtrees source (e.g. the 1615 patent, 1631 inquisition, 1634 Santiago genealogy, 1854 arms confirmation), cite that source instead.
