Transcription supplied by D. Hurley, 7 Oct 2026, from an undated internet text; checked 7 Oct 2026 against the scan of Fitzgerald 1783, pp. 158-159, which it matches. Long-s OCR errors corrected (Efq; = Esq;, prefence = presence). Names as printed.
1740. Timothy Hurly, Honora Hurly his wife, Timothy Hurly his son, Maurice Fihilly his son-in-law, Cornelius Fowloe, Michael Shinnick and Mary Bradeen, were executed at Gallows-Green, Easter-Saturday, April 5th, for stealing a piece of linen-cloth out of the dwelling-house of John Terry, Esq; one of the Sheriffs of the City of Cork, who of course, had the satisfaction of escorting the nefarious culprits to the place of execution. Elenor Shinnick, sister to said Michael Shinnick, became an approver, and prosecuted the whole to conviction, otherwise she would have forfeited her life. Joan Fihilly, wife of said Maurice Fihilly, and daughter to said Timothy Hurly, escaped the Gallows on account of being in company with her husband at the time of committing the robbery, but she was presented by the Grand Jury as a vagabond, and transported. Mary Bradeen pleaded pregnancy, which was found not to be the case by a jury of matrons. Honora Hurly would have also escaped the Gallows, in the same manner as her daughter Joan Fihilly, had she not been convicted on another indictment, for stealing a piece of linen-cloth out of the dwelling-house of Joseph Popham. Cornelius Fowloe, declared on the Gallows, a few moments before he was launched into eternity, that if he had his liberty, he would steal the shirt and blanket, pointing to them, where they were drying on a bush opposite the Gallows, and just before his face, without being discovered, notwithstanding the multitude of spectators then in his presence.

Note on source

Checked 7 Oct 2026 against the Internet Archive scans. Fitzgerald 1783 prints the full entry on pp. 158-159 under the year 1740, and the supplied transcription matches it (including "would have also escaped"). Edwards 1792 prints an abridged version on pp. 150-151 that leaves out Elenor Shinnick, Joan Fihilly, Mary Bradeen's plea and Honora's second indictment. (An earlier draft cited p. 178 and p. 158; those were scan image numbers, not printed page numbers.) Fitzgerald's list of mayors and sheriffs names John Terry and Noblet Phillips as sheriffs in the mayoral year 1739-40, which supports the entry. Easter Sunday 1740 (Julian) fell on 6 April, so Easter Saturday was 5 April, as printed. Grade C: one printed compilation published 43 years after the event, citing no document; Edwards copies Fitzgerald, so it is not independent.
