Elias Roberts Mexican War Pension — Page 42

Accrued Pension Certificate Approved

This internal Bureau of Pensions form, filed under the Act of March 2, 1895, tracks the final approval of the accrued-pension claim following Elias Roberts' death. It confirms Certificate No. 17,403, last issued February 7, 1890, and records the pension as now payable to his widow, corrected in a marginal annotation dated January 21, 1897 from "Malvina Roberts" to "Mulvina" — the same Melvina Roberts whose claim appears on page 37. Her relationship to the pensioner was shown by the record of marriage (page 38), with no legal barrier demonstrated by a marriage of over thirty-five years, and the fact and date of his death shown by the attending physician's statement (page 36) together with the subscribing witnesses' evidence (page 37). The claim was submitted for admission January 13, 1897, approved for allowance January 21, 1897, the certificate issued January 27, and mailed January 30, 1897.
