Elias Roberts Mexican War Pension — Page 43

Duplicate Scan — Report of Pensioner Dropped

This page is a second, separate scan of the exact same document already transcribed in full on page 41 — the January 13, 1897 U.S. Pension Agency notice from D.A. Carpenter reporting Elias Roberts dropped from the rolls because of death. The printed form, the January 13, 1897 stamp, the $8-to-May-4-1896 wording, and Carpenter's signature all match precisely. This second scan pass differs only in a couple of faint marginal pencil annotations, reconciled below; the primary transcription remains the one recorded on page 41.

Full Transcription

(Full body text is identical to the document already transcribed on page 41. Recorded here only where this scan pass's reading differs from or adds to that reading:)

Left margin, pencil, sideways: this pass reads something closer to "[?]entered / [Cert?] Jan 20-'97" — consistent with, and likely the same note as, page 41's "Cert'd / Div. Jan 20/97 [?]." Treating page 41's reading as the better-supported one (transcribed with more confidence there), but both agree on the "Jan 20/97" date.

Right margin, pencil, sideways: this pass reads "Knoxville, Tenn." with a mark resembling "O.E." above it, where page 41 read "O.E. [?] / Mexican War." The "O.E." mark is consistent between passes; the text beneath it is not — likely the same faint sideways writing read differently on two passes rather than two different notes, since both are marginal annotations on the same physical document. Left unresolved; page 41's reading is retained as primary.
