Note

[Bob Dean.FTW] Source: John Dale Jackson 'Margaret 'Katie' Withers was the Fourth Grade teacher, Waterloo Twp.,Athens Co., OH. for many years. She lived in the family home until herdeath. Married and divorced, Aunt Katie was my 4th grade teacher. Atthat time she was principal as well as the 4th and 5th grade teacher. These two grades were combined in the early 1940's with the 4th grade onone side of the room and the 5th grade on the other. When she had topunish someone (generally one of the boys; She would send him outside tocut a switch. She specified the lenght and type - usually willow orhickory.) The worst year of my education, ours was a small town and shedidn't want anyone to think she showed favor to her nephew. Shescceeded to the point that classmates would tell their parents how meanshe was to me (She really wasn't - she had taken pains to explain thesituation to me before the school term started.) The parents of myclassmates finally approached her and eplained that they knew she wouldnever show favor. Things eased up a bit then. She was always very goodto me and I felt a great loss at her passing. Her family home was agathering place for her nieces and nephews and their families. The yardwasarge and well shaded by large Maples near the road.'
