Note: "Ranill fitz Ranell oge Hurly", pardoned in the large Munster pardon after Kinsale, three names from "Teige O Cullanie alias O Cullaine, Ellyne nyne Ranill, his wife". This is the record that names the heir whose name is defaced in the 1631 inquisition.

Ranell Oge took Sir James Sempill's assignment on 28 Jan 1614/15, so the father was dead by then. A phrase in the RC copy may read "twenty years now last past" (i.e. c.1611); uncertain.

Quality of data: primary evidence
Citation details: heir identification, grade B+
Quality of data: secondary evidence
Note: The 1631 inquisition records that on Ranell Oge's death his heir, "of full age at the time of the death of his said father, and married", succeeded. The heir's name is defaced. Identified as this Randal from the 1601-02 pardons, the 1635/36 borrowing on the castle by "Rannell oge Hurly" and the 1642 outlawry of "Randal Hurly of Ballinacarrigy and his son Randal".
Death of a father
before September 16, 1631
Ballinacarriga, Ballymoney, County Cork, Ireland
Note: Date/place from the inquisition taken at Bandonbridge, Co. Cork, 16 Sep 1631 (no. 241), which finds that Ranell Oge Hurley - having inherited Ballinacarriga from his father Ranell Hurley senior and taken the 19 Dec 1615 patent - "died so seized".

Date/place from the inquisition taken at Bandonbridge, Co. Cork, 16 Sep 1631 (no. 241), which finds that Ranell Oge Hurley - having inherited Ballinacarriga from his father Ranell Hurley senior and taken the 19 Dec 1615 patent - "died so seized".

The passage naming his own heir and heir's age is defaced in the surviving manuscript copy. His exact death date is not given, only that it was before this inquisition (16 Sep 1631).

D'Alton gives "Randle Hurley and Randle Hurley Oge of Ballynacarrig".
Note: Bennett's text of the Youghal roll: "Randal Hurly, of Beallenecarrigy, together with that of his son, Randal"; his list prints "Hurly, Randal, Ballinacarriga".
"In arms" case (Commonwealth)
April 17, 1654
Bandon, County Cork, Ireland
Citation details: Examination of Teige Sleagh, 17/04/1654, MS 828, fol. 121r; http://1641.tcd.ie/deposition/?depID=828121r177

Teige Sleagh of Mansey (aged about 28), Mortaugh Mahony and Humphrey Crowley swore he was "in Actuall Armes" in 1641. Taken before Francis Wheeler and J. Barrington. Assigned to the father (this record) as a working hypothesis, grade B: a separate file from that on "Randle oge Hurly in the parish of Balimony" (10 Apr 1654), which is assigned to the son (X346).
Note

RESEARCH NOTE (Claude, 2 Oct 2026). Marriages: (1) Ellen, daughter of Teige MacCarthy (probably Teige McDermod McCormac of Dunmanway), by May 1601 (fiant 6516; JCHAS 1906 "m. 1st dau. of Tadhg of Dunmanway"); (2) probably Ellen de Courcy, daughter of John 18th Lord Kingsale, by July 1628 (funeral entry; Lodge). Ranell Oge himself is eliminated as Ellen de Courcy's husband because his wife was Catherine O'Cullane (Santiago 1634).

Lodge also says Hellen FitzGerald of Dromana, widow of Gerald 19th Lord Kingsale (d. 1642), "remarried with Randal Hurley of Beallana-Carigy". That is more likely this Randal's son (or this Randal as a widower); not linked.

JCHAS 1906 says Randal Oge succeeded in 1631 and "his name appears on the chalice"; the chalice has not been traced.

The 1906 account calls the 1641 man "Randal Oge Beg" and makes him the builder's grandson; the 1601 fiant shows "Ranell oge beg" was already the heir in 1601, so that label belongs to this generation.

Note

RECORDS OF "RANDAL (OGE) HURLEY OF BALLINACARRIGA", 1642-1652, NOT YET ASSIGNED BETWEEN THE FATHER (X342) AND THE SON (X346). This note is on both records.

  • Feb 1642: rode with McCarthy Reagh, Teige Downy McCarthy of Dunmanway, Donnell O'Donovan of Castle Donovan, Teige son of Florence McCarthy of Castleclogh and Mulmurry McSwiny of Fanlobbus, "with the number of twelue hundred", taking the goods of Robert Coats of Shanaway, Ballymoney parish: "Randall oge Hurly of Ballynecarrige in the said County gentleman".
  • 1641-42: debtor of Bandon merchants: "Randall { } Hurley of Ballencarrige, gentleman" and "{Richard?} oge Hurley of Ballemoney, gentleman" (Henry Turner, clothier; both names damaged; there was a real Richard Hurley of Coolmain in 1642, so the second may not be a Randal); "Randall oge Hurly of Ballinecarge ... gentleman" (John Landon, merchant).
  • 13 Sep 1652: alive as "Mr Randall Oge Hurley", with Dermond O'Leary "that liues with" him.
The Youghal indictment roll of 2 Aug 1642 (as printed by Bennett) names "Randal Hurly, of Beallenecarrigy, together with ... his son, Randal", and in April 1654 the Commonwealth commissioners at Bandon opened two separate "in arms" files: "Randle oge Hurly in the parish of Balimony" (10 Apr) and "Randoll Hurly of Ballinkarrige" (17 Apr). So two Randals, father and son, were alive 1642-1654 (grade B). Which of the records above belongs to which is not settled.
Note

BENNETT'S LATER DESCENT (19th-century tradition, grade C; not entered as people until registers or gravestones confirm it).
Bennett (1869) says Randal II, the forfeiter (this man), had six sons: two priests, two killed in the war, Randal Oge III (X346), and one other. That other son had:

  • Jeremiah "Dermod Tresalia" (the light-footed): said to have held Mounteen and Ballinorohur; fought in the Williamite war; died without issue; buried at Clogagh (Kilmaloda), where his stone was still to be seen in 1869;
  • a daughter, who married a McCarthy (Mac-ni-Crimen) cousin;
  • a son (unnamed) with 7 sons and 3 daughters, including James "Shamus Atrooher" (the marksman; at the siege of Limerick). Shamus's sons: James (priest), Randal (priest, d. at Clonteada near Kinsale), Daniel, Jerry, John, Patrick and Michael. Michael's line: Michael - Michael - Daniel - Daniel - Daniel Hurly, mechanic, of Clonakilty (living 1869). Others of the family then lived in Desertserges parish.
To test: the Clogagh gravestone; Desertserges and Clonakilty Catholic registers; Clonteada.
Citation details: pp. 191-201
Quality of data: questionable evidence
Note

Randal Hurley Oge (the 1641 castle holder) is placed with his father only: which of the heir's wives was his mother is not recorded.
