Birth of a sister
Note: Place: the 1634 Santiago genealogy calls her "Doña Isauel Ohurleo, natural de Baly Nicarrigui" (native of Ballinacarriga). Date is an ESTIMATE: she was married by May 1601 (fiant 6515) and her son Dermicio was 34 in 1634 (born c.1600), so she was probably born c.1575-1585. |

Pardon
Citation details: no. 6701 (5392), 15 Nov 44 Eliz., pp. 99-100 Quality of data: primary evidence Note: "Ranill fitz Ranell oge Hurly", pardoned in the large Munster pardon after Kinsale, three names from "Teige O Cullanie alias O Cullaine, Ellyne nyne Ranill, his wife". This is the record that names the heir whose name is defaced in the 1631 inquisition. |
Birth of a son
Note: ESTIMATE. A landholder in 1641 and outlawed with his father in 1642. |
Death of a paternal grandfather
Citation details: Inquisition no. 241, MS pp. 86-87 Quality of data: primary evidence Note: The 1631 inquisition finds he "died so seized" of the castle and lands, after which Ranell Oge, his son and heir, "of full age and married", entered. Ranell Oge took Sir James Sempill's assignment on 28 Jan 1614/15, so the father was dead by then. A phrase in the RC copy may read "twenty years now last past" (i.e. c.1611); uncertain. |
Marriage
Citation details: p. 149 Quality of data: primary evidence Citation details: vol. VI, p. 154 Quality of data: secondary evidence Note: "Elen mar: to Randall Hurley of Beallanacarigy in the County of Corke Esquire" (funeral entry of her father, John Lord Kingsale, d. 25 Jul 1628). Husband identified as the heir rather than the patentee Ranell Oge (whose wife was Catherine O'Cullane); probable, grade B. |

Succeeded as heir
Citation details: no. 241, MS p. 89 (heir clause defaced) Quality of data: primary evidence
Source: Ballinacarriga Castle research project: compiled notes (Claude for Dave Hurley, Sept-Oct 2026)
Citation details: heir identification, grade B+ Quality of data: secondary evidence Note: The 1631 inquisition records that on Ranell Oge's death his heir, "of full age at the time of the death of his said father, and married", succeeded. The heir's name is defaced. Identified as this Randal from the 1601-02 pardons, the 1635/36 borrowing on the castle by "Rannell oge Hurly" and the 1642 outlawry of "Randal Hurly of Ballinacarrigy and his son Randal". |
Death of a father
Note: Date/place from the inquisition taken at Bandonbridge, Co. Cork, 16 Sep 1631 (no. 241), which finds that Ranell Oge Hurley - having inherited Ballinacarriga from his father Ranell Hurley senior and taken the 19 Dec 1615 patent - "died so seized". Date/place from the inquisition taken at Bandonbridge, Co. Cork, 16 Sep 1631 (no. 241), which finds that Ranell Oge Hurley - having inherited Ballinacarriga from his father Ranell Hurley senior and taken the 19 Dec 1615 patent - "died so seized". The passage naming his own heir and heir's age is defaced in the surviving manuscript copy. His exact death date is not given, only that it was before this inquisition (16 Sep 1631). |
Mortgage
Citation details: vol. 4, p. 171 Quality of data: primary evidence Note: Winter 1635/36: "Rannell oge Hurly" borrows a further £20 from Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork, on "the castletown & lands of Ballynecargie in carbry", already mortgaged to Boyle for £60; the mortgage rises to £80 and the rent to £8 a year. This is the heir or his son (two Randalls held land in 1641). |

RESEARCH NOTE (Claude, 2 Oct 2026). Marriages: (1) Ellen, daughter of Teige MacCarthy (probably Teige McDermod McCormac of Dunmanway), by May 1601 (fiant 6516; JCHAS 1906 "m. 1st dau. of Tadhg of Dunmanway"); (2) probably Ellen de Courcy, daughter of John 18th Lord Kingsale, by July 1628 (funeral entry; Lodge). Ranell Oge himself is eliminated as Ellen de Courcy's husband because his wife was Catherine O'Cullane (Santiago 1634). Lodge also says Hellen FitzGerald of Dromana, widow of Gerald 19th Lord Kingsale (d. 1642), "remarried with Randal Hurley of Beallana-Carigy". That is more likely this Randal's son (or this Randal as a widower); not linked. JCHAS 1906 says Randal Oge succeeded in 1631 and "his name appears on the chalice"; the chalice has not been traced. The 1906 account calls the 1641 man "Randal Oge Beg" and makes him the builder's grandson; the 1601 fiant shows "Ranell oge beg" was already the heir in 1601, so that label belongs to this generation. |
Note
Randal Hurley Oge (the 1641 castle holder) is placed with his father only: which of the heir's wives was his mother is not recorded. |
