Muirhily" (also spelled Murlihy, Murtlihy) is not a separate name Randal held at another point in his life — it is the Cork-Irish spelling of the surname otherwise anglicized as "Hurley," from Ó Muirthile. Both forms refer to the same family name; sources use one or the other depending on whether they are writing in an Irish-language/phonetic register or an English-administrative one.
This spelling is drawn from the reading of the initials "R.M." carved with the date 1585 and the initials "C.C." in a window recess on the top floor of Ballinacarriga Castle, Co. Cork. The standard modern reading (Heritage Ireland, Dunmanway Historical Association, and others) takes R.M. as Randal Muirhily/Hurley and C.C. as his wife, Catherine O'Cullane.
Attribution to this specific individual (Randal Oge, d. c. 1631) rather than his father Ranell Hurley senior (d. before 1615) is probable but not proven: it rests on the July 1584 pardon naming "Randal oge Hurley of Ballinacarriga castle" a year before the carving, and on the 1634 Spanish Santiago genealogy independently confirming a Randal Hurley + Catherine O'Cullane couple of Ballinacarriga in this generation. No record directly names either man in connection with the carving itself.

Birth
|
Note: No direct record gives a birth date or place. This year is a rough ESTIMATE, reasoned as follows: he was already active and named "of Ballinacarriga castle" in a July 1584 pardon (so an adult, likely 25+, by then); his father Ranell Hurley senior died before 1615 leaving Randal Oge "of full age and married" to inherit (1631 Bandonbridge inquisition); and his daughter Isabel (m. Denis O'Driscoll of Castlehaven) had a son old enough to be knighted in 1634. Placing his birth c.1555 is consistent with all of this but is not attested in any source. Note: Place: the 1634 Santiago genealogy calls her "Doña Isauel Ohurleo, natural de Baly Nicarrigui" (native of Ballinacarriga). Date is an ESTIMATE: she was married by May 1601 (fiant 6515) and her son Dermicio was 34 in 1634 (born c.1600), so she was probably born c.1575-1585. |

The Castle of Ballinecarrigg, als Bealanecarrigeh (& 2 ploughlands in Ardea Qr.)
December 19, 1615
Ballinacarriga, Ballymoney, Carbury, Co. Cork, Ireland
Note: Carbery (Irish Cairbre) was a large Gaelic lordship/territory in the far southwest of Co. Cork, stretching roughly from Kinsale west to Mizen Head and Cape Clear, had been assigned to Sir James Sempill of Beltries for a planned plantation. Rather than displace the existing landholders, Sempill sold his rights to them directly. Florence McDonell Cartie of Banduff and Ranell Oge Hurley received an assignment from Sempill by deed dated 28 Jan 1614/15. On the strength of it, they surrendered their existing claims to the crown on 16 Dec 1615, and the crown regranted the same lands back to them three days later, 19 Dec 1615, to hold in perpetual freehold "as of the Castle of Dublin, by fealty." This surrender-and-regrant was the standard mechanism of the period for converting Gaelic tenure into title secure under English law. This surrender-and-regrant was the standard mechanism of the period for converting Gaelic tenure into title secure under English law. The regrant restructured, not merely confirmed, the holdings: marginal marks split the lands into two new manors — the Manor of Banduff (McCartie's) and the Manor of Ballinacarriga (Hurley's) — each with 1,000 acres demesne, power to create tenures, and a Court Baron. A further body of land in the same patent was granted to both men jointly but assigned to neither manor. Note: Like much of Gaelic Munster after the collapse of Gaelic lordship following the Nine Years' War (ended 1603) and the wider push toward English-style land tenure, Carbery's underlying superior title had passed into the crown's hands to grant out. Like much of Gaelic Munster after the collapse of Gaelic lordship following the Nine Years' War (ended 1603) and the wider push toward English-style land tenure, Carbery's underlying superior title had passed into the crown's hands to grant out. That is how it ended up assigned to a courtier like Sir James Sempill in the first place, for him to then sell on to the people, like McCartie and Hurley, who were already living there and farming it. Randal Oge Hurley's parentage is disputed. Bennett's Bandon history and local tradition make him "son of Thomas Hurly of Knocklong," but this is doubted: no contemporary record links a Thomas Hurly of Knocklong to Ballinacarriga, and the 1631 Bandonbridge inquisition instead names his father as Ranell Hurley senior (d. before 1615), from whom he inherited the manor. Oral tradition naming his mother as Mary O'Crowley (echoed in the Collins/O'Crowley pedigree material, JCHAS 1952) is likely a generational mix-up with a later Hurley-O'Crowley marriage. The MacCarthy Glas pedigree (1867) preserves the family tradition that Randal Oge built or completed Ballinacarriga Castle and married a wealthy O'Cullane (Colan) heiress "an oir" (of the gold), consistent with the panel dated 1585 in a top-floor window recess, carved "R.M. C.C." (Randal Muirhily, Catherine Cullinane). Bennett also records the folklore of the tally-stick and "seven sons," none independently verifiable. Treat the Knocklong-origin story and the "seven sons" folklore as unproven family tradition rather than established fact. |

THE "EIGHT RANDAL OGES" TRADITION (researched Oct 2026). Four generations are documented and entered in this tree: Ranell Hurley senior (est. b. c.1530, d. before 1615); Ranell (Randal) Oge, the 1615 patentee (d. by 1631); his son and heir Randal "Oge Beg" (named 1601-02, outlawed 1642); and the heir's son Randal Oge (castle holder 1641, outlawed 1642). This covers roughly 1530 to the 1640s and agrees with the first half of the tradition. The later generations (1642-1740) have not been traced. After the 1642 outlawries and the Cromwellian and Restoration grants the family held no land, so the land records that document the earlier Randals stop. Catholic registers for the area begin after 1800, and most wills and Chancery records of 1650-1740 were destroyed in 1922. Because every heir was a "Randal Oge", surviving references rarely say which one is meant. Leads still to be checked: the remarriage of Hellen FitzGerald (widow of Lord Kingsale, d. 1642) "with Randal Hurley of Beallana-Carigy" (Lodge); "Randal Oge Duff's son" in the 1641 Depositions; Jacobite army and outlawry lists; the father of Angelina Hurley (c.1700), wife of Cormac MacCarthy Glas; the unnamed later family in JCHAS 1906 pp. 78-79; the Registry of Deeds (from 1708); and diocesan will indexes. Later generations will be added only when a record names a father and son. Citation details: App. p. 181 Quality of data: questionable evidence
